Magill Estate is Penfolds' only single vineyard wine.
All the grapes are grown on the historic Magill Estate Vineyard originally planted in 1844 by Dr. Christopher Rawson Penfold. Magill Estate Shiraz, first produced in 1983, is still made on site in the same wax-lined open top cement fermenters in which the Granges of the 1950's and 1960's were created. The grapes are handpicked, basket-pressed and true to the intentions of its creators, the wine remains a contrast to Grange - fermented at lower temperatures, matured in French and American oak and less reliant on sheer power. It is more European than any other Penfolds wine. Today, the Magill vineyard consists entirely of Shiraz vines, all planted between 1951 and 1985.
